Recently learned about Rene Girard from the Choc Knox Unplugged podcast. Really interesting thoughts on mimetic desire and the idea of a scapegoat. In Judaism, the scapegoat would be cast out into the desert taking the sins of the people with it. Jesus was that scapegoat, cast out of the city, killed on the cross, taking the sins of the world. Since Jesus rose from the dead and is physically with the father, that means he was the ultimate scapegoat and no scapegoat is needed any longer. It's the reason that I can forgive my brother, without taking vengence or staying bitter. Truly a fascinating topic!
